Lekorde White, biology freshman, announces Shinedown as Groovin’ on the Grounds’ headliner on Monday in the Union’s Live Oak Lounge. Big Boi and Prom Date will also perform in the concert held March 20 on the Parade Ground.

Rock band Shinedown and former Outkast member Big Boi will perform at Groovin' on the Grounds.

Battle of the Bands winner Prom Date will open the March 20 concert on Parade Ground.
Melissa Guidry, Student Government director of student involvement, announced the lineup Monday at noon in the Live Oak Lounge with Students on Target members.

SG will pay Shinedown $50,000 and Big Boi $27,500 to perform,  as well as $7,750 to Green Machine Entertainment, which represents the University and works with each artist's agent. Green Machine receives 10 percent of what SG pays the artists.

Shinedown and Big Boi are being paid from the spring concert fee account, which comes from a $3 student fee.

The spring concert fee account has $131,561 to be used for the event. The money not spent on the lineup will be used for production, Guidry said.

Production expenses will include a stage, amps, screens, security, advertising and a rain location, Guidry said.

SG will also use $12,500 from sponsorship accounts to fund the concert.

Prom Date is not being paid to perform. The student-based group won Battle of the Bands on Oct. 31, and performing at Groovin' was one of the perks of winning.

"We've never paid the winner [of Battle of the Bands]," Guidry said. "To play at Groovin' is a prize because we're offering them the exposure."

But several students at the lineup announcement were unhappy with SG's choice.

"I'm not a Shinedown fan, but I don't think there are a whole lot of students who are," said Christina Eskew, biology sophomore.

Kayla Comeaux, biology sophomore, said she would have preferred MGMT to perform.

"Shinedown wouldn't be my first choice," Comeaux said. "It's not really for me, but I do like that they chose Big Boi and Prom Date. Those are good starting bands."

Shinedown wasn't SG's first choice either, Guidry said.

"We had the most difficulty with getting the headliner because we had to cut back how much we offered because funds got smaller from last year," Guidry said.

Shinedown was in the top 7 percent of the survey of 4,000 students, Guidry said. The top choices were MGMT and Lil Wayne.

Guidry said she and Students on Target didn't choose those bands because they don't fit with Groovin's mission to provide a PG-13 atmosphere. Even with the current artists, Groovin' planners have put several songs on the "no play" list.

"We were able to get [Shinedown] for $25,000 less than last year's headliner," Guidry said.
SG paid last year's headliner, Akon, $75,000.

SG Vice President Martina Scheuermann said releasing the lineup took a long time because it has taken longer than usual to get contracts signed.

"The contracts didn't get finalized by all parties involved until last week," Scheuermann said.

SG Adviser Michelle Eldredge said student suggestions were taken into consideration.

"We definitely looked at who was out there and available," Eldredge said. "Both Big Boi and Shinedown were on the survey."

Students on Target hosts the annual concert, and Guidry said donations and merchandise sales will benefit Tigers for Haiti and the American Red Cross.

Guidry said Tigers for Haiti plans to introduce Tigers for Haiti wristbands, which students can buy for $3 or more.

Groovin' has never made profits, but this year vendors will sell merchandise, and attendees can make donations.

"It only makes sense to utilize the opportunity when a lot of students are there to get the message out," Scheuermann said. "It's a great way to kick off the response from students how they want to mobilize Tigers for Haiti."

Scheuermann said this year is the first time Groovin' on the Grounds will be a fundraising event, and it's an opportunity for students to give money to a nonprofit organization.

Other artists on last year's roster included electronic artist DJ PK1, local rapper Dee-1 and singer/songwriter Corey Smith.

"From going to a world-known artist like Wyclef Jean and Akon to Shinedown is a disappointment," said Jeanette Campos, history junior.

About 300 students attended the announcement in Live Oak Lounge, and four students participated in a dance-off for backstage passes.

Groovin' is free to the public.

According to the contract with Green Machine Entertainment, Groovin's goal is to "provide an evening of music in an alcohol-free, fun and safe environment" with the theme of "a good time not wasted."

A multi platinum artist for 50K and you spoiled brats are complaining about a free show. It's 25K less than the SG paid for a womaninzing one hit wonder who sang about going to prison and abusing women last year.

Shinedown was on the survey and tons of people voted for them and they are a great up and coming band. You guys are clueless. .45 is not about suicide either. The ignorance in the comments of this thread is enough to make me throw up.

Next year just hire some local bands and some washed up local talent. I wonder what Louisiana LaRue and the Chee Wee are doing?

I'd rather take my chances of being shot at a lil wayne concert than have to listen to shinedown for 1 hour

Its humorous to see how all colleges are starting to take this politically correct stance on how they spend students money. It's happening all over. Colleges are denying their students what they want in order to look good to the parents of future freshmen. They denied MGMT because they wanted to look good. Of course, student government doesn't stand up for the students. They are just political younglings who don't want to make enemies.

I've never met anyone who has claimed to be a Shinedown fan. I've had the misfortune of seeing them once and I will never waste my time on such a pathetic bunch of fools again. PG-13?? Aren't all of Shinedown's songs about suicide??? Particularly decent topic after that kid jumped off the Life Sciences building today!

Thanks SG, I love Shinedown! I remember getting my first guitar when I was twenty six. My dad stole it from a pawn shop and brought it to our trailer in Walker. Then it was Shinedown 24/7! Except for when we were cooking meth, which was pretty much all the time,

Are non-students allowed to this event?

this year will suck, epic fail SG. Next year I'm going to step in and see if I can help because who ever is negotiating these concerts is obviously inexperienced. Major waste of $75+ grand, help us buy our textbooks, stop raising our fees, or even a $5 dollar giftcard to burger king would have been a better idea.

" I think 50K is a deal for a band that has sold over a million copys of there lastest album and 2 million single! Somebody must like them! "

Yeah, and they're performing in Charenton. Did they pay 50K?

I am a lover off all music and attend no less than 15 concerts a year. Shinedown is one of the most talented groups around. I will travel 385 miles for this free concert!!!

@Nash: The money cannot be donated towards research or a faculty because it comes from a certain account, taken from a certain portion of student fees. This is part of student life programming that needs to happen in order to provide campus entertainment and attract students. LSU doesn't organize the event, SG does. A specific incompetent person must've decided this.

As for the lineup, its pathetic. $50,000 for Shinedown?! They might have a small fan base, but thats it. A very small fan base. Akon or Wyclef brought in thousands of people. That money could've brought in someone better.

Good luck attracting over 6000 people with that lineup. Such a waste of our money.

Screw education. Heck, I bet the people in Shinedown don't have a degree and they make more than I make in a year by playing crappy music for 1 hour. I'm in the wrong profession. That degree from a flagship university was worthless.

On a more serious note, what little money LSU has left is being used to pay $50,000 for a band that the vast majority of students hate. You could have paid half that and got a better band and maybe put the rest towards something like, I don't know, paying a teacher or funding research.

i completely agree that the PG-13 atmosphere is dumb, the concert is intended for adults. however, I LOVE shinedown and I couldn't be happier that they are coming. oh and ps I'm not an LSU student so thank you all for paying for my free concert!

LSU dodged a bullet when SG said no to Lil Wayne. Can you imagine the crowd that that would have attracted to the parade grounds? You would not have found me within ten miles of the place. If LSU police can't handle an architecture student parking his car in the Quad, how would they respond when the REAL stuff went down?

In SG's defense, they probably couldn't get Lil Wayne since he's in jail for a gun charge. That would've made him perfect for Groovin' on the Grounds since SG is looking to provide a fun and safe place for students to get shot at.

Thank you SG for picking Shinedown, a great southern rock band that has really come into the mainstream lately. It is funny to hear the complaints from all the MGMT and Lil Wayne fans, but if the criteria was PG-13, then Shinedown was really the best option when you look at the student poll results. Not happy with the decision? Maybe next time you will vote. But until then, get over it, and try to enjoy the free concert. At least the headliner this year wont be a convict.

I remember thinking when they sent out that survey that all it was just a ploy to make us feel like they wanted our opinion, this is pathetic.

I dont know whats sadder the fact that you got shinedown to play or the fact that you paid shinedown 50,000 to play.

There are countless other acts that cost less or equal to the 50,000 that would have been better than Shinedown, they're really not worth anything close to 50k. Here's a list:

All American Rejects- 50k, Arctic Monkeys- 40k, Ben Folds- 40k, Better than Ezra- 15-20k, Elvis Costello- 50k, Gavin Degraw- 50k, Girl Talk- 20k, InnerPartySystem- 5-10k, Jacks Mannequin- 50k, OK Go- 35k, Plain White T's- 30-40k, Santogold- 30k, Snow Patrol- 40-50k, The Airborne Toxic Event- 15-20k, The Fray 40k, The Bravery- 25k, The Roots- 40-50k, TV on the Radio- 20 to 30k

That was from a short google search, so surely some one could have put in a bit more effort than I to find a better group for a better value than 50,000 for Shinedown, because I can gurantee they don't make half of that when they get a portion of tickets from a standard show. I understand schedule conflicts with many groups and that effects who we can get, but we're adults attending college, there shouldn't be a PG-13 tag added to what we get. I also believe a way to eliminate controversy over what acts are picked would be to line up the possibilities and then poll the student body from the pool of acts that would be able to perform on the given day within the budget.
