The Environmental Conservation Organization will host Earth Week and the LSU Sustainability Conference next week to promote awareness and encourage the University community to become more sustainable.
This year, Earth Day falls April 22.
The conference begins Monday, and ends Friday, and will be held on the Parade Ground.
It will be the first sustainability conference for the University and will feature daily forums discussing environmental issues.
"This is our third year doing the festival, but this year we wanted to emphasize the educational aspects of sustainability," said Lauren Stuart, president of ECO and economics senior.
Throughout the week, the Baton Rouge and University community members will work together to educate students on issues such as Louisiana's environment, healthy foods, waste reduction and political involvement.
Other planned events include a gardening exhibit Tuesday in Free Speech Alley, a dinner discussion with representatives from the international humanitarian organization, Doctors Without Borders on Monday, and a bike workshop to be held at The Bicycle Shop on Highland Road.
Friday's festival takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a keynote speaker from Louisiana Speaks, a planning committee of the Louisiana Recovery Authority. It will also feature an "EcoShowcase," featuring reprentatives and exhibits from the LSU recycling department and Baton Rouge community groups.
"The main part of the festival is the EcoShowcase, which will exhibit the efforts of several student and community groups," Stuart said. "The goal of the festival is to unify the campus around shared values and common concerns."
